Google Announces New Nexus One, Compatible With AT&T and Rogers 3G Bands

Google might have found out about the poor sales performance of the Nexus One, so they want to expand, thus launching a new version of the Nexus One, compatible with more bands. This GSM unit comes with support for AT&T and Rogers Wireless 3G/UMTS connectivity. It supports 850/1900/2100 MHz bands and it goes for the same price of $529.

We remind you that the original model supported the T-Mobile-friendly 900/AWS/2100 MHz bands, so this is a welcome addition. This decision opens the market to more types of users, although we haven’t heard of any subsidy option.
T-Mobile is still offering the device, with rumours that HTC is shipping CDMA versions of the Nexus One, getting ready to sell them on Verizon.

Nexus One Available on Vodafone’s Site; Launched This Month?

While US consumers are taking full advantage of the capabilities of Nexus One, the European ones are stuck waiting for the handset to be released via a local carrier. Vodafone UK is one of those carriers, gearing up to launch the phone this Spring. Also, we’ve learned that Nexus One just popped up on Vodafone’s site.

Scheduled for an April release (although it’s not 100% sure), the handset has been spotted on Vodafone UK’s website with a “coming soon” note attached to it. Don’t discount a March launch as well and if you’re wondering about prices, speculations claim they’ll be around EUR 150 with a 2 year contract.
Vodafone UK customers will also have the choice between this handset and HTC Legend, running Android 2.1 as well.

Android Developers to Get Free Nexus One/ Moto Droid Units

Google is very keen on giving away Nexus One units, as they did during their 2009 Christmas party (Google employees only) and now they’re up for a new session of gifts, destined to reach the hands of Android developers. This time, devs will choose between a Motorola Droid or Google’s very own phone.

There’s a catch to this: you’ll get the handset for free only if you have at least one app that that got more than 5,000 unique downloads and scored 3.5 stars or more. This is a pretty original way of drawing specialist to Google’s side, specially with strong rivals like Microsoft or Apple not needing such PR to draw devs to them.
While Apple is famous for its business model, App Store, iTunes and all and Microsoft has a great tradition in the field, Google and Android are also trying to get some love from the software creators. A good move towards this appreciation will be the end of the fragmentation of Android, by implementing the 2.1 version on all devices, as announced before.
Back to the freebies, know that they’re invite-only and available for developers in the US.
